Craving some fresh farm produce? Visit THE BARN and find the freshest fruits and vegetables grown by some of the most skilled farmers in the Pacific Northwest.
Fresh From Beginning to End
We grow a large portion of our products. This is how we keep our fruits and vegetables fresh at all times. When shopping at THE BARN you are not only benefiting your health by consuming healthier products but you are supporting your local small business economy.
THE BARN is the retail end of Trapold Farms, Inc., a 3rd generation family owned and operated farm that’s been a Portland icon since the early 1940’s.
The Trapolds started custom farming for others as they slowly started acquiring small pieces of land along the Columbia River just east of the Portland airport. The roadside market known locally as “THE BARN” was originally just that, with dirt floors. As the public happened by, they would see the family out harvesting produce from their fields and stop to purchase some.
Light industrial development caused the Trapold’s to move the farming part of the operation to the coveted farmland of Sauvie Island. Trapold Farm’s crops are grown adjacent to the confluence of the Columbia & Willamette Rivers where the rich soil, clean air and protected zoning provide for optimal growing conditions. Here we pursue environmentally safe farming practices and good land-stewardship.
THE BARN remains a popular destination for locals and out-of state consumers. Generations of families have relied on us for their hand-harvested fruits & vegetables picked fresh daily. We open right after Memorial Day with strawberries, rhubarb, asparagus and all your early salad fixings as well as beautiful hanging baskets, annuals and bedding plants from our own greenhouses. From early June the season comes into full swing with berries, cherries and every other fruit & vegetable you could want for your eating and preserving desires.
If we don’t grow it, we get it, from our neighboring farmers to assure its local freshness and flavor.
As the summer wanes, you feel fall in the air and look forward to sampling the many varieties of pears and apples we carry from our growers in the Hood River Valley. We’re also famous for our huge heads of kraut cabbage (even the annual Verboort Sausage & Sauerkraut festival uses our cabbage), Brussels sprouts on their stalks, and more than 25 varieties of hard-shell winter squash that can also be found in stores throughout the Pacific Northwest and Alaska.
For your decorating needs, we have tons of pumpkins (many varieties & sizes), corn stalks, straw, gourds, ornamental corn and much more. Just before we close for the season at Thanksgiving, stock up on your winter potatoes and anything else you may need to make it through until we open again the following spring.
We also offer a full line of canning jars & accessories along with a good selection of local honey and jams.
From our family’s fields to your family’s table, come see us for the best produce around.
Support Local, Be Environmentally Friendly
Each time you buy locally grown produce, you are supporting local farmers who play an essential role in the local economy. Shopping locally is also a great way to be environmentally friendly. It is a strategic means of lowering the carbon footprint, since your produce does not have far to travel.
